Christmas Gogol

Having accustomed his spectators to large and densely populated theatrical colossi, this time
Menshikov produced a deliberately chamber and elegant performance at the stage "Under Roof" of
the Mossovet theatre, where once he shined in "Caligula". But this modesty doesn't mean shyness at
all. "The Gamblers" of "Theatrical Company 814" in its own way is a very daring and cheerful
performance, which has taken a risk to bring Gogol back to the elements of "The Evenings at
Khutor Near Dikanka", take away mystical stock phrases and gloomy prophecies, immerse him into
the atmosphere of theatre acting, merry music, singing and vaudeville cascade. Looks like
Menshikov decided to recollect his youth and his unquenched passion for music comedy. For quite a
long time he hasn't been so relaxed and light, simple-hearted and charming on stage as in the role of
Uteshitelny. As if he has got rid of a dozen years and a heavy weight of producing troubles to start a
new life in the rhythms of his bygone young parts, enjoying Gogol's text and joyfully responding to
the acting of his partners – Alexandr Usov (subtle neurasthenic Ikharev), Alexandr Sirin (tired
phlegmatic Krugel), Alexey Gorbunov (demonic Shvokhnev), Nikita Tatarenkov (blond cherub with
demon's tail – Glov, junior), and, finally, the debutant in Menshikov's crew – Viktor Sukhorukov
from St. Petersburg (man of many hats, transformation virtuoso Glov and Zamukhryshkin). The first
public performance is on December 20. The official premiere will take place on January 15.
